The two most heard words of feelings during the interviews? Respect and Credibility – The blue collar manager wants more respect and credibility, and do not think a college degree should be required for that.
As you by now know I am writing a series of the Top Challenges blue collar managers face. The people I most want to hear from, at this point, are:
- New and used experienced blue collar managers.
- Managers from around the world are welcome.
This is what I want to talk to you about:
- The challenges you have or had as a manager
- What you most struggle with
- Understanding what is required of you
- Technology
- Planning
- How you are evaluated.
- Social changes – how you interact with others.
- What you overcame
- And of course this can lead to other topics.
Defining blue collar managers and owners:
Since I started asking people about this topic many have asked for a clarification on what a ‘blue collar manager’ is. I describe us as having typically come from a working background, may have started with less formal education, especially with respect to management and leadership. We have moved out of the field into the office and now manage people that do the work instead of doing the work ourselves, hopefully.
This often does includes business owners and I would certainly like to hear from you as well.Another thought might be to interview a series of managers in one or more companies. If someone is interested in this scenario, please have them contact me to discuss how this might work and benefit them.
To get this started I am going to spread the word as best as possible via the internet. I ask all of you that are interested or might know of someone interested to please:
- Leave a comment (which will ask you for your email but will NOT be publicized but I need it to contact you.)
- The comment should tell me what challenges you have or have had.
- Whether or not to contact you for a follow up phone call or an online survey, and your preference.
- Spread the word by telling others about this survey.
- Your personal information will be kept strictly confidential (unless you care to share in a comment)
Results will be posted as soon as I have heard from enough people, but the survey will continue on.
Oh, yeah, the fine print – I am not using this to gather marketing information. I won’t send you an email or call you unless you ask me to. I rather dislike those that do that to me.
